Sign Language Proficency Interview

"I wanted to know what my ASL skills were and what I needed to improve.... I felt relaxed and the interviewer put me at ease as we talked about my interests, job, family, etc…. This gives you an opportunity to have one on one feedback. You can see your mistakes, which helps you to know what you need to improve." ~ Ohio Educational Interpreter

Benefits

  • uses conversational format to assess conversational abilities in ASL
  • suggests areas of improvement

Philosophy

It is essential for professionals who are using ASL to understand their language ability and needs in that area. The Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) used at OSD was developed at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. It is used by many schools and agencies serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing across the United States.

What the SLPI is not

The SLPI is a measure of conversational skills. It does not measure interpreting skills, nor does it measure skill in using English-based forms of signing.
