Middle School Staff BIOs

Michele Odgen -
Michele Ogden

My name is Michele Ogden and I teach Middle School Science.  I have been teaching at OSD for 14 years.  I attended The Ohio State University with an undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing Science and a Master’s Degree in Deaf Education. Science is my passion and I love sharing that knowledge with my students. I always tell my students to be the best they can be and try their hardest.

Susan Bachtel -
Ms. Susan Bachtel

Hi, my name is Susan Bachtel, I am Middle School (grade 6-8) Reading and Math teacher. I have been teaching for 22 years. Iwent to Gallaudet University for  B. A. in Secondary Education inMathematics and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon for  M.A. inDeaf Education.  I first joined OSD as a part time youth leader and often enjoyed sharing my experiences with the “curious”  students. I then decided to go to Gallaudet to become a math teacher to continue sharing my love for math and life experiences. I didn’t have any role models as a child as I was mainstreamed full time.  My motto to my students "Deaf people can do anything except hear by I. King Jordan"

Phyllis Moore -

Mrs. Phyllis Moore

I joined OSD in August of 1989.  I was asked to come to OSD by a former superintendent.  I have taught every grade from K-12th. I have taught all five content areas.  I did my internship at St. Rita School for the Deaf and did my first two years of teaching at a mainstreamed school.  I have three degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Biology, a Master of Arts degree in Deaf Education, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  I graduated from three different universities: Ohio University, University of Cincinnati, and Ashland University.  I became a  teacher because I love watching kids improve their skills.  I really love to teach writing, because I want to see deaf students being able to communicate on papers with anyone.

I joined OSD as a student teacher in January 2014. I chose OSD because I grew up in Ohio and have always loved this area, so I wanted to make a better connection with the Deaf community where I come from. This is my third year teaching at OSD; I have taught second grade math and science and  third grade ELA and science. I am teaching Middle School Social Studies this year. I have my Bachelor of Science as an Intervention Specialist focusing on Deaf Education from Kent State University with an additional certificate in Deaf Education: Multiple Disabilities. Prior to coming to OSD, I did a one year residential internship at the Indiana School for the Deaf as a practicum student working with students from K-12 in a variety of classrooms. I wanted to become a teacher because I love being around children and helping them to learn more about the world around them as a whole. As they learn more, they become better friends and citizens in our communities, and all of our individual talents work together to make our communities great. I also chose to become a teacher because multi-tasking ninja isn’t an official job title. What I love most about my job is that I get to do it with these special kids. They put a smile on my face, motivate me to do better, and keep me energized!
